When it comes to strikers and West Ham it often feels like groundhog day.

Gianluca Scamacca was the 51st West Ham striker signing in the last 13 years when he arrived last summer.

But like far too many of the others he failed to hit it off at West Ham and was sold to Atalanta after just one season.

At nearly 34 and without a goal since August, Michail Antonio looks to have had his day as a Premier League forward.

And don’t even get Hammers fans started on Danny Ings.

It is clear for all to see that West Ham need to sign a striker. Because they should have signed one in the summer after selling Scamacca.

Well there is news on that front it seems.

Because West Ham have asked for ‘preliminary information’ to finally sign a top class Antonio heir in January claims reporter.

And the striker in question is Man United outcast forward Anthony Martial.

According to Rudy Galetti in his column titled ‘The Insider’, West Ham have already contacted Manchester United about a possible deal.

“The players who could leave (Man United) instead – potentially in January – are Anthony Martial and Harry Maguire: the French is followed with attention by West Ham who are looking for a striker and have already asked for preliminary information,” Galetti states.

Martial could help unlock West Ham’s attacking potential

Martial may not have been a big hit at Old Trafford, but he is six years Antonio’s junior and is a genuine striker.

Antonio’s limited ability and intelligence when it comes to making runs, very much dictates how West Ham play.

So a move for Martial could really help unlock West Ham’s potential to play a more exciting, attacking brand of football.

Martial has a record of a goal every three games which is nothing to write home about. But his technical level and finishing is far superior to Antonio.

Given West Ham have been heavily linked with Martial in the past, if he is available at a decent price then this could have legs.
