Newcastle could make a late attempt to sign West Ham transfer target Conor Gallagher from Chelsea before deadline day.

That’s according to Sky Sports News reporter Keith Downie, who claims that Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is a huge fan of the 22-year-old Chelsea star and is eyeing him up as a potential replacement for Jonjo Shelvey.

Now, this will obviously come as a big blow for West Ham, with David Moyes having eyed up a move to sign Gallagher from Chelsea since the summer.

The England international may well find first-team opportunities hard to come by at Chelsea now after the recent influx of world-class attacking midfielders.

And should Enzo Fernandez move to Stamford Bridge, it may well be the final straw for Gallagher. This is a deal that West Ham should be all over. It appears as though we could be beaten to the punch by the Toon though…

Newcastle eyeing deadline day Conor Gallagher deal

The Magpies are on the hunt for more new signings before the January transfer window slams shut tomorrow at 11pm.

Sky Sports News reporter Keith Downie (Monday January 30th, 12:14pm) has explained how Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher is a transfer target for Newcastle boss Eddie Howe:

“I spoke about him a lot in the summer. Conor Gallagher the Chelsea midfielder, he’s a player who Eddie Howe really likes. He tried to bring him in in the summer. Chelsea were reluctant to do business with a threat to their Champions League place. Newcastle will be hoping that their stance has softened. There has been no indication as yet that Chelsea’s stance has softened. However, they do need to lose a few players. If he was allowed to leave, I think Newcastle would be right in there to sign him.”

If Newcastle sign Gallagher from Chelsea on deadline day, it will be further evidence of the gulf between the Toon and West Ham at the moment.

We’ve already lost Harrison Ashby to the Magpies, and it is clear for everyone to see that the Hammers are on a totally different trajectory to the Tyneside outfit at the moment.

Hopefully Moyes springs a few surprises before the transfer window closes tomorrow, because without any new additions we could be on our way to the Championship.

Newcastle are showing time and time again how to recruit players properly. And if they bring Conor Gallagher to St James’ Park, he will be a superb addition for them. He’s been described as an ‘immense talent’ by Sport Bible – the 22-year-old may be the final piece of the jigsaw for the Toon, as far as qualification for the Champions League is concerned.
