Trevor Sinclair has backed West Ham to beat Aston Villa to the signing of Leeds ace Kalvin Phillips in the summer.

Hammers boss David Moyes and Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard are set to battle it out for Phillips’ signature in the summer according to a report from The Times.

Leeds manager Jesse Marsch is allegedly demanding around £60 million for the 26-year-old (The Times).

That seems like a lot of money but Phillips, a 19-capped England international, is a truly top-class performer. He is the most important player Leeds have at Elland Road.

So if West Ham or Aston Villa really want to sign him, they will both have to go big this summer.

The Villans have certainly been more ambitious than the Hammers in the transfer market of late. But we are still the bigger draw according to one pundit.

Trevor Sinclair backs Kalvin Phillips to sign for West Ham

The ex-Hammer is a regular on talkSPORT nowadays.

He was discussing the future of Leeds star Kalvin Phillips on today’s show.

And Sinclair explained why West Ham are better placed than Aston Villa to sign Phillips this summer, when speaking live on talkSPORT today (23 March, 12.30pm:

“I feel West Ham are a slightly bigger club than Villa at the moment based on the 60,000 supporters they get and the recent performances in the league. I feel West Ham is a slightly bigger proposition than Aston Villa for Kalvin Phillips.”

What an incredible signing Phillips would be for West Ham.

He has been described as an ‘unbelievable’ midfielder by Football insider and we tend to agree.

Phillips has played only 12 Premier League games this season after suffering some bad luck with injuries.

During those outings, the 26-year-old has averaged 2.3 tackles, 1.2 interceptions, one clearance, 1.6 dribbles and 0.5 blocks per match (Who Scored).

Phillips has made 52.5 passes on average per game and has recorded an impressive completion rate of 82.9% (Who Scored).

The Leeds ace has proven himself at the very highest level and was a standout performer for the England national team during the Euros last summer.

Phillips coming to West Ham would see him reunite with his England teammate Declan Rice. Keeping Dec and adding the Leeds star would be a real statement of intent from the Hammers board this summer.

Let’s hope that Sinclair is right and West Ham are indeed ready to splash the cash on Phillips this summer. He would be a seriously good signing for the Hammers.
