Star Jack Clarke scored a wonder goal with West Ham ‘poised’ to finally make an opening bid to Sunderland.

As West Ham desperately seek additions in the January transfer window it seems Sunderland ace Jack Clarke is emerging as the prime target.

The Hammers are on the hunt for a new forward and defender. Their need has become more urgent after a spate of injuries to key players and with Mohammed Kudus and Nayef Aguerd at AFCON.

Speculation has intensified that Sunderland’s star man Clarke is the player West Ham have settled on to tick several boxes.

The ‘new Jack Grealish’ counts as homegrown and fits the recruitment philosophy of technical director Tim Steidten.

Clarke can also play across the forward line as well as centrally. Indeed he can even operate as a left wingback.

And there has been a development overnight as the Black Cats ace continues to shine.

Anyone wondering what West Ham see in Clarke only needed to watch Sunderland’s win over Ipswich as Clarke smashed home an unstoppable drive from outside the box in a 2-1 victory.

Report: West Ham ‘poised’ to make opening bid

After the game last night The Mirror then claimed the Hammers are now set to make their first offer for the player at the ‘top of their shortlist’.

“West Ham are ready to up their interest in £20million-rated Sunderland winger Jack Clarke,” the report states.

“The Hammers are under increased pressure to sign a home-grown player this month after selling midfielder Conor Coventry to Charlton Athletic in midweek for an undisclosed fee.”

The report claims Sunderland are ‘likely to drive a hard bargain’ so West Ham’s opening bid may be knocked back.

But West Ham received great encouragement last week from Sky Sports’ north east reporter Keith Downie.

He suggested Sunderland will be tempted to sell for any offer over their £20m valuation.
