West Ham United’s reported move to sign Jan Bednarek from Southampton on deadline day is now off.

That’s according to Sky Sports presenter Jessica Creighton who broke the news live on Sky Sports News today at 3:27pm.

We covered reports from Sky Sports around an hour ago claiming that the Hammers were close to signing Bednarek.

So something must have happened at advanced stages of the negotiations between the two clubs and the player.

West Ham boss David Moyes will definitely be on the hunt for a new central defender, with Craig Dawson set to leave the London Stadium this summer.

The Scot will seemingly have to explore alternatives targets to Bednarek now though…

West Ham deal to sign Jan Bednarek is off

Sky Sports presenter Jessica Creighton has claimed that the Hammers will not be signing Bednarek from Southampton this summer:

“Breaking news coming into us in the last few seconds. Jan Bednarek’s proposed move to West Ham looks like it’s off. The Southampton centre-back now seems to be moving to another club. Reports claiming that club is Aston Villa.”

We won’t lose any sleep if West Ham do indeed miss out on signing Jan Bednarek.

Having said that, we do believe that he would have been a useful addition for us.

He was in the top 10 in the Premier League for both interceptions and clearances last season (Premier League’s official website).

In 31 Premier league appearances last term, Bednarek averaged one tackle, 2.3 interceptions, 4.5 clearances and 2.9 successful aerial duels per game (Who Scored).

During those outings, he made 46.6 passes on average per match and recorded a completion rate of 81.7% (Who Scored).

He has been described as a ‘brick wall’ by The Athletic. Meanwhile, BT Sport have labelled the 42-capped Poland international as ‘outstanding’.

Oh well. Moyes will just have to look elsewhere now as it seems like Jan Bednarek will not be moving to West Ham.
