Reported Newcastle January interest in 'unbelievable' 24-year-old the last thing West Ham need

Newcastle United allegedly could be set to hijack West Ham United’s long-term pursuit of Fenerbahce defender Attila Szalai.

That’s according to a report from Turkiye Gazetesi who claim that Newcastle boss Eddie Howe wants to bring the 24-year-old defender to St James’ Park in the January transfer window.

West Ham boss David Moyes allegedly made a £13 million bid to bring the 24-year-old centre-back to the London Stadium back in the summer – one that was rejected by Fenerbahce.

And now with the Magpies keen on Szalai, the Hammers really will have our work cut-out, if we are to bring him to the London Stadium.

The good news for both Newcastle and West Ham is that the Hungary international centre-back reportedly wants to move to the Premier League.

It’s now just a case of where he will be plying his trade beyond the end of the January transfer window…

Newcastle could beat West Ham to Attila Szalai

Turkiye Gazetesi claim that the Toon are now in the hunt for the Fenerbahce ace’s signature.

Considering Newcastle’s new-found wealth and the incredible start that they have made to the Premier League season, that really is the last thing that West Ham needed.

I would love to see Szalai at the London Stadium.

He really does have absolutely everything that the Hammers need at the moment.

The physically imposing Fenerbahce centre-back seems to be tailor made for the Premier League.

Standing at 6ft 4in tall, the 31-capped Hungary international is an imposing figure. He is incredibly strong, athletic and dominant in the air.

In 32 Super Lig games for Fenerbahce last season, Szalai bagged one goal and two assists. During those appearances, he averaged 1.1 tackles, 1.1 interceptions and two clearances per game (Who Scored).

He made 43.8 passes per match and recorded a completion rate of 81% (Who Scored).

Szalai’s former manager Petros Konnafis once labeled him as an ‘unbelievable’ defender and likened him to Virgil van Dijk (First Time Finish).

In my opinion, Newcastle are in a far better position than West Ham to sign the 24-year-old in January.

And that’s really frustrating for the Hammers.
