Is Jesse Lingard talking in riddles about West Ham again with a new social media post after his friendly appearance?

That’s the question West Ham fans are asking today in the wake of Jesse Lingard’s run out for the Hammers in a friendly against Ipswich.

Free agent Lingard has been training with West Ham for the last three weeks as the club weigh up signing him on a short-term deal.

After an initially frosty reaction to the news Lingard could rejoin the Hammers, many fans have warmed to the idea.

But West Ham allegedly face competition from Wolves ahead of the deadline for clubs to submit their squads to the Premier League on September 13th.

While some West Ham fans are ambivalent about whether Lingard signs, many are open to “forgiving” his decision to snub them for Forest last year.

He had looked nailed on to sign for the east Londoners last summer. But after a series of cryptic social media messages, quotes, videos and teases, Lingard joined Forest on a one-year deal instead.

The 30-year-old claims the reason for that decision was that he did not “feel the love” from West Ham at the time.

Lingard has been on something of a West Ham charm offensive of late with his posts on social media.

But supporters were shocked by claims this week that West Ham are only willing to offer him a six-month deal, particularly in light of the reported interest from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The midfielder played in a behind-closed-doors friendly for West Ham against Ipswich yesterday. It was a match the club agreed with their opponents not to publicise or report on.

But Lingard was on his phone again last night and some West Ham fans think he has sent a message to the club.

Taking to Snapchat, Lingard posted the quote: “When they can’t touch the person you’ve become, they’ll try to dig up who you used to be.”

The post has been shared by West Ham fans on Twitter and some believe it is a message to the club as they continue to deliberate over offering him a deal.

Lingard credited former Hammers teammate and now West Ham sporting director Mark Noble with helping revive his career during that magical loan spell at the London Stadium by taking his phone away.

Perhaps Nobes needs to intervene again?

With another 50-game plus season ahead and four key players missing up to six games due to AFCON between January and February, offering Lingard – who can play in midfield and as a second striker – seems like a no-brainer for the Hammers.
