Jacob Steinberg has reacted to a recent transfer development surrounding West Ham.

West Ham are in grave relegation danger after their recent 2-1 defeat at the London Stadium against Nottingham Forest.

That result leaves them seven points clear of safety, and Nuno Espirito Santo finds himself at risk of a sack if things do not improve.

Jacob Steinberg baffled by West Ham transfer approach

Guardian journalist Jacob Steinberg took to X to express his views on the approach taken by the Hammers in the transfer window.

They have signed Taty Castellanos and Pablo so far, shelling out a combined £47million on the two strikers.

At the same time, West Ham have the worst defence in the Premier League, conceding 43 goals in 21 games.

Even Wolves, who could end up being the worst team in the competition’s history, have conceded two goals fewer.

Steinberg’s bafflement comes from the club not prioritising a new defender transfer in January over signing two new strikers.

He wrote: “It’s incredible that West Ham have gambled £50m on two strikers from abroad when they haven’t kept a clean sheet since August. You’re not going to stay up if you can’t defend but they went into must win games with centre-backs who have failed under four managers.”

Will West Ham sign a new defender in the January transfer window?

Nuno will be aware that things cannot continue in the same manner as they have all season if the Hammers are to avoid relegation.

His job when he replaced Graham Potter was to get them out of the relegation zone, and he has failed to do that.

Known to be a defensive manager, the Portuguese has also struggled to shore up the back line and has asked the board to bring in a new defender in January.

Charlie Cresswell is liked by many at West Ham, but the club are still to launch a move for the Toulouse defender.

While he is the priority target, other names have been mentioned as well, and it seems likely that the Hammers will sign a new defender before the window closes.
