Premier League explain why Crysencio Summerville’s goal was disallowed

There was a moment on Tuesday night when West Ham thought that they were 2-0 up.

A pass was played into Castellanos and that led to the ball falling to Crysencio Summerville, who slotted the ball into the back of the net.

The Hammers players celebrated and after a lengthy VAR check, the Argentine was deemed to be in an offside position.

The Premier League then issued a statement on X, explaining their decision to chalk off the goal.

They wrote: “VAR checked the referee’s call of goal – and established that Castellanos was in an offside position in the build-up and recommended that the goal was disallowed.”

How did Taty Castellanos fare on his West Ham debut?

Castellanos was thrown right into the starting eleven, much to the surprise of the majority of Hammers fans.

He officially joined only a day before the game, but Nuno entrusted him to lead the line.

The Argentine most certainly showed promise and kept looking to make a run in behind the defenders so as to stretch the back line.

While he did miss two big chances [Sofascore] in the game, Nuno will be pleased that he at least got himself in the right positions.

Mustering an xG of 0.4 in a match where the Hammers did not create much is certainly refreshing.

However, he will need to do more off the ball as he lost seven out of his nine attempted aerial duels and won none of his three on the ground.

His passing was decent and given the fact that it was his debut, fans will be thrilled that he showed character and promise, and they will now expect him to start firing in goals.
