Arsenal are allegedly now leading West Ham United in the race to sign prolific Benfica striker Darwin Nunez in the summer transfer window.
That’s according to a report from Portuguese newspaper Record who claims that Arsenal have leapfrogged the Hammers in the race to sign the brilliant Uruguayan hitman.
The Evening Standard claimed on Thursday that David Moyes’s number one priority is to sign Nunez in the summer.
West Ham made a £42 million bid for the 22-year-old striker in the January transfer window according to Gianluca Di Marzio via Valentina Fass from Sky Italy, when speaking to Sky Sports (January 31st, 11:53 am).
That offer was rejected and now it seems as though Arsenal are in the box seat to sign Nunez.
Arsenal Darwin Nunez claim made
Record claims that Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is keen to bring Darwin Nunez to the Emirates in the summer.
And the Gunners are thought to be in pole position to sign the South American hitman.
Losing out on Nunez to Arsenal would be a huge blow for West Ham and will further underline the mistake we made in not offering more for his services in January.
It’s all well and good waiting for the summer but sometimes you’ve just got to strike a deal while the opportunity to do so is there and waiting to be taken.
Darwin Nunez would have been the absolutely perfect summer signing for us.
The Uruguay international’s playing style is quintessentially South American. He is a tenacious presser, plays with real physicality and has real technical ability. The 22-year-old seems to be ideally suited for the Premier League what with its intense and robust nature.
Nunez has bagged 26 goals in 33 games for Benfica this season (Transfermarkt).
He’s fast, great in the air and has absolutely everything that West Ham need in a striker.
Nunez could be available for around £68 million in the summer (A Bola). Arsenal will be able to afford that no problem but it’s doubtful as to whether West Ham will be splashing out that kind of money on one player.
What makes this situation all the more frustrating is the fact that we could have signed Nunez for just £50 million in January according to The Sun.
If Arsenal sign the Uruguayan ace, he will undoubtedly be a huge hit at the Emirates. And West Ham will have no excuses. We should have got this deal done and dusted two months ago.
