West Ham United have reportedly just been dealt a major January transfer window blow by Arsenal.

Arsenal and West Ham both need some new signings in the January transfer window, but as things stand, it seems as though the Hammers are far more active than the Gunners are.

David Moyes has already signed Kalvin Phillips on loan from Manchester City, whilst potential deals for Armando Broja and Jota are being talked about as well.

Another player who West Ham have been heavily linked with is Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee, with Arsenal chasing the 22-year-old’s signature as well.

Both London clubs are crying out for a proper centre-forward, and I think the Holland under-21 international would be perfect for us. However, it seems like Arsenal have stolen a big march in the race for his signature…

Arsenal line up move for West Ham target in the January transfer window

According to a report from Corriere di Bologna (print edition January 27th, page 8), Arsenal are leading the race to sign the former Bayern Munich striker in January.

That’s a big blow for the Hammers. The Bologna hitman would sit Moyes’s system at the London Stadium absolutely perfectly.

AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli absolutely raved about Zirkzee just a couple of days ago after his side faced Bologna – a game in which the young striker scored a goal – as quoted by Sempre Milan:

“He’s a great player. I’ve followed him since his days at Bayern Munich and then at my Parma. A fantastic player, with physicality and quality. He has everything. He’s doing very well at Bologna.”

This season, Zirkzee has bagged nine goals and four assists in 23 games in all competitions for Bologna (Transfermarkt).

Standing at 6ft 4in tall, the Dutchman is incredibly strong in the air and is well capable of holding up the ball. He possesses impressive pace as well but crucially, he’s a very good finisher too.

If Arsenal do go on to sign him in the January transfer window, Moyes will surely be feeling as though he should have moved for Zirkzee sooner – the one that got away if you will.
