West Ham United face Olympiacos tonight in the Europa League, and Maxwel Cornet will surely be given some game-time.

Maxwel Cornet joined West Ham from Burnley in the summer of 2022 for around £17.5 million (Sky Sports).

The 27-year-old Hammers winger has endured a disastrous spell at the London Stadium over the past 15 months though, and things went from bad to worse for the Ivory Coast international a couple of weeks ago when he was omitted entirely from the West Ham squad for the Premier League clash with Aston Villa.

David Moyes clearly isn’t a fan of Cornet, for one reason or another, and the Scot has given the former Burnley and Lyon man just 88 minutes of action in all competitions this season (Transfermarkt).

There have been numerous times when we’ve been crying out for some pace and directness during games this season, but Moyes has ignored the 27-year-old, choosing to bring on Danny Ings or Pablo Fornals instead.

And from Cornet’s perspective, I truly believe that tonight’s clash with Olympiacos should very much be the last chance saloon for him…

Maxwel Cornet has big West Ham decision to make

The clash with the Greek side is a vitally important one. Now, I believe that Cornet should be given a chance to start the game tonight, but we all know Moyes won’t be ready to take any kind of risk outside his trusted starting XI.

However, if Cornet doesn’t start, he absolutely should be given 30 minutes at the very least, regardless of what the score is.

If West Ham are cruising against Olympiacos, then there is no reason why the Ivory Coast international shouldn’t be given a chance to prove what he can do.

And if we’re drawing or losing, I really don’t want to see Ings brought into the fray – in fact, I never want to see the 31-year-old wear a West Ham shirt ever again.

The Hammers need something different. We’re desperately short of some real pace and direct running in behind the opposition’s backline.

I feel like Maxwel Cornet can bring exactly that to this West Ham team, and he is surely deserving of a chance tonight after what can only be described as baffling treatment from Moyes.

However, if he isn’t given a fair opportunity, the answer should be a very simple one for him – he must push to leave the London Stadium in January.
