West Ham United striker Danny Ings has really struggled since joining the club back in the January transfer window.
David Moyes brought Danny Ings to West Ham from Aston Villa for around £12 million (Evening Standard), and that fee now looks like one of the biggest wastes of money in our history.
The Hammers forward has endured a nightmare spell at the London Stadium, with just three goals in 33 games to his name so far (Transfermarkt).
The 31-year-old is painfully ill-suited to Moyes’s system, and it has actually been really hard to watch him any time that he has been given a chance by the Scot.
It was a panic signing at the time that Moyes is surely now regretting, and if given half the chance, the Scot would sell him in January…
West Ham United’s current stance on Danny Ings outlined
Football journalist Paul Brown has been speaking to Give Me Sport about Ings’ current situation at the London Stadium.
And he suggested that the club won’t stand in his way if there is a chance for him to leave the London Stadium this winter:
“I think Danny Ings realises from how it’s gone at West Ham that he’s going to need to get out because he’s never really been used in the way that gets the best out of him. He’s not a lone striker. He can’t really play the same sort of game that Michail Antonio does. They’re very different. Ings likes to feed off a frontman, and he’s not going to get that in West Ham’s current setup. So I think he knows that if he wants to play regular minutes in the Premier League, which he does at his age, he’s going to need to find a new club. I don’t think West Ham would stand in his way, to be quite honest. He’s not done enough for West Ham to suggest that he’s got much of a future there and I think it’s probably best for all parties if he leaves.”
I think we can all agree that Ings needs to leave the Hammers this winter, for the good of his own career.
West Ham should be doing everything we can to move him on, even if it’s for a nominal fee, in order to get his massive £125k-a-week wages off our books.
Ings is 31, and seems to be well past the levels required to be playing Premier League football – especially when playing for a side who operate with just one solitary striker. He has absolutely no pace or power, and seems completely lost at the London Stadium right now.
After Moyes’s four summer signings, the experienced striker is the Hammers’ fifth shortest serving player – so if he does leave the club in January, his stay in East London would have been a really short one.
The sooner that West Ham sell Danny Ings the better, for the good of both him and the club. And hopefully Moyes has learned from he huge mistake he made by bringing him to the club in the first place.
