West Ham fans will remember Alonso as the pass-master midfield star who faced their team numerous times for Liverpool over the years and also starred for Spain and Real Madrid.

Nowadays he is winning admirers for the superb job he is doing at German side Bayer Leverkusen.

And those on the Hammers board are said to be among them.

That’s according to a report from The Sun overnight which claims Alonso is ’emerging as a strong candidate’ to be the next West Ham boss should Moyes leave.

He has taken Leverkusen from second bottom of the Bundesliga to top six and into the Europa League semi-finals since his appointment in October.

‘Senior figures at West Ham are well aware’

All while playing an eye-catching brand of progressive, attacking football likened to that of Arsenal under his childhood friend Mikel Arteta.

“It is understood that senior figures at West Ham are well aware of the buzz surrounding Alonso and consider him a real possibility to replace Moyes, despite his relative lack of experience,” The Sun claims.

Earlier this week a report claimed agents of potential summer signings being lined up by West Ham have been briefed that there will be a change of manager this summer.

West Ham majority stakeholder David Sullivan has consistently backed Moyes when speaking to Hammers News this season, as recently as last month.
