West Ham are concerned behind the scenes about midfielder Flynn Downes

There are apparently some real concerns behind the scenes at West Ham United about midfielder Flynn Downes.

Flynn Downes left West Ham in the summer to join Championship side Southampton on a season-long loan.

Hammers boss David Moyes allowed the 24-year-old to join Southampton in the summer, and he has already been really impressing at St Mary’s, drawing huge praise from Saints boss Russell Martin.

Downes joined West Ham from Swansea City in the summer of 2022 for around £14 million (Wales Online), but he really struggled to reestablish himself as a regular starter at the London Stadium.

The tenacious tackling midfielder’s Hammers future looks bleak, especially with Moyes apparently eyeing up a January transfer window swoop for Kalvin Phillips.

And now it seems as though Downes has lost the trust of those with power inside the London Stadium…

West Ham have Flynn Downes concerns

The 24-year-old is performing well with Southampton, but that doesn’t mean that he’s guaranteed a future back at West Ham at the end of this season.

According to Sean Whetstone – a reporter very close to majority owner David Sullivan – there are real concerns behind the scenes at the London Stadium regarding whether Downes is good enough to play Premier League football:

I would not be surprised one little bit if West Ham decide to sell Downes in the summer transfer window.

Sure, he’s doing really well at Southampton and is obviously impressing at St Mary’s, but I really don’t think he has that extra level needed to succeed at the very top of the game.

The 24-year-old is a solid player, and he never let the Hammers down whenever Moyes gave him a chance last season.

In my opinion though, he’s just too bland, and needs to be far more progressive if he is to ever make it at Premier League level.

Flynn Downes is surely finished at West Ham, and Whetstone’s latest claim lends credence to that notion.
