West Ham are at base camp one in their mission to climb Mount Everest and qualify for the Champions League says manager David Moyes.

The Hammers moved back up to fourth place in the Premier League with a narrow 1-0 win over Watford on Tuesday night.

West Ham are in a battle with the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Wolves for the European spots.

And while finishing in the top six again would be a fantastic achievement for West Ham, fourth spot and a place in the Champions League is the ultimate dream.

West Ham’s rivals do have games in hand on Moyes’s side. But as the old saying goes in football it is better to have the points on the board.

Each time West Ham have managed to get themselves into the top four positions over the last couple of seasons, they have buckled under the pressure.

But a late assault during the run-in could be the order of the day if West Ham can keep their key players fit and finding some consistent form.

After the Watford win, Moyes was asked what moving back up to fourth could mean for his side psychologically.

West Ham are at base camp one in their mission to climb Everest says David Moyes

“I said at the start of the season that, last season, we were two points short of the Champions League, and I think the target now in my head is now quick can we get to 50 points,” Moyes told the club’s official website after his side moved onto 40 points.

“Then it’s 60 points, and so on.

“There’s a bit of climbing Mount Everest in there. We’re only at Base Camp One at the minute and now we’ve got the hard bit to go.”

Making fourth spot will be a massive ask for West Ham, particularly after failing to sign any new players in the January window.

But the Hammers do of course have two bites at the cherry.

Moyes’s boys are in the last 16 of the Europa League, three ties away from the final in Seville.

If West Ham were to go on and win the competition they would automatically qualify for next season’s Champions League as reward.
