West Ham United ace Alphonse Areola has reportedly just been dealt a real hammer blow whilst on international duty.

The 30-year-old stopper joined West Ham from Paris Saint-Germain on loan in the summer of 2021 before making his move to the London Stadium a permanent one a year later for around £11 million (Sportmob).

However, David Moyes has still refused to make him his number one, with Lukasz Fabianski retaining that particular position.
And it seems as though that has affected Areola’s national team aspirations…
West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola dealt hammer blow
According to a report from French publication Le Monde, AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan is now considered to be the new French number one after Hugo Lloris’s retirement.
Interestingly, West Ham co-owner Daniel Kretinsky is an indirect shareholder in Le Monde.
That will be a major blow for the Hammers star but nobody can blame Didier Deschamps for the decision.
Areola has hardly played in the Premier League for West Ham over the past two seasons.
The fact that the 30-year-old isn’t the number one goalkeeper at the London Stadium truly baffles me. Yes, he’s made looked shaky at times during his last few appearances but how can he be expected to build up any kind of consistency when he goes weeks and sometimes months without playing?

Fabianski has been a very solid goalkeeper for us over the past 4.5 years, but he’s not in the Frenchman’s league in my opinion.
The 30-year-old’s shot-stopping, distribution, reflexes and agility are all far superior to Fab’s. Perhaps the only thing that the 37-year-old does better than the ex-PSG ace is claiming crosses.
Alphonse Areola quite simply needs to be playing every single week for West Ham in my view.
And it seems as though he needs to be doing that to salvage his career with France as well.
