Trevor Sinclair has suggested that West Ham United should have pushed harder to sign Amadou Onana this summer.

It was only earlier this month when The Guardian’s Jacob Steingberg claimed that the Hammers had agreed a fee with Lille to bring Onana to the London Stadium.

Everton then hijacked the deal though and Frank Lampard won the race for the Belgium international’s signature.

The Toffees signed Onana, 21, for around €40 million (£34 million) according to The Guardian.

He is said to be on around £100k-a-week at Everton – a salary that West Ham refused to pay (The Standard). And that might have been a mistake according to an ex-Hammer…

Trevor Sinclair believes West Ham should have signed Amadou Onana

The former Hammers star really wanted to see Onana move to the London Stadium.

Sinclair was speaking to talkSPORT (August 30th, 10.50am), and suggested that he was disappointed when Everton hijacked the Hammers’ move to sign the 21-year-old midfield powerhouse:

“Onana, I was disappointed (West Ham) missed out on him. 6ft 4ins, a real physical presence. What I’ve seen of him at Everton, he looks the real deal.”

We tend to agree with Trev.

The 6ft 5 in Belgium international possesses all of the attributes that West Ham currently lack. He is incredibly strong, has energy and stamina in abundance and is perfectly built for the intense nature of Premier League football.

Onana is a really special talent. He has been described by Sport Magazine as a ‘sensational’ young player. Meanwhile, he’s been labelled as an ‘incredible’ player by Total Football Analysis.

In 32 Ligue 1 outings for Lille last season, Onana averaged 1.5 tackles and one interception per game. He made 20 passes on average per match and recorded a completion rate of 84% (Who Scored).

The young Belgian is one of the most exciting talents on the planet.

Trevor Sinclair clearly thinks West Ham should have signed him…as do we.

We have to say that the board deserve all the praise in the world for this transfer window though. So it’s hard to be too critical of them. And who knows, had West Ham signed Onana, perhaps David Moyes wouldn’t have been able to bring Lucas Paqueta to the London Stadium.
