EXCLUSIVE: A top West Ham source has issued a worrying response to new Tim Steidten Liverpool links that have emerged.

Back in June last year we reported on Hammers News that West Ham had beaten the likes of Liverpool to the appointment of Tim Steidten as the club’s technical director.

Reporter Fabrizio Romano confirmed at the time that Liverpool had wanted German ‘pearl diver’ Steidten at Anfield.

But the Hammers majority owner David Sullivan won the race following a recommendation from close advisors. And the former Bayer Leverkusen man has been a revelation in east London.

Steidten oversaw what was widely regarded as the best transfer window business in the Premier League in his first summer.

He brought in the likes of Mohammed Kudus and Edson Alvarez from Ajax as the Declan Rice money was used expertly.

He also played a key role in Jarrod Bowen committing to a new seven-year West Ham contract amid genuine interest from Liverpool.

Steidten has been such a hit, West Ham fans even have their own terrace chant for him.

So there is understandable concern after Football Insider claimed Steidten is a leading contender to be the new Liverpool director of football.

The report claims the Merseyside giants have begun their search for a recruitment chief to replace Jorg Schmadtke, who is leaving the club at the end of this month’s transfer window.

And it is suggested that some differences of opinion between Steidten and David Moyes could see the recruitment chief take up Liverpool’s offer.

‘It’s not easy’

A further concern for the Hammers is the fact the Reds are said to be lining up alleged West Ham target Xabi Alonso as Jurgen Klopp’s replacements. Alonso is the man Steidten played a key role in appointing at Bayer Leverkusen.

Hammers News has reached out to the most senior contact inside the club over the claims.

And the top West Ham source has issued a worrying response to the Steidten Liverpool links.

“You should be asking Liverpool not me,” the source told Hammers News when asked whether the Reds want Steidten.

When pressed on whether West Ham would be powerless to stop Steidten leaving for Liverpool should he wish to do so, the source told us: “It’s not easy.”

West Ham fans will be hoping Steidten feels he has sufficient power and control at the club that he will want to stay in London regardless of Liverpool’s reported desire to bring him to Anfield.
