Tomas Soucek comments on free role highlight just how much West Ham need to make a major upgrade

West Ham United midfielder Tomas Soucek has been given a new role to play this season by David Moyes.

David Moyes moved West Ham man Tomas Soucek into more of a defensive role at the start of the 2021/22 season, in order to accommodate a more attacking role for Declan Rice.

The Hammers midfielder began his London campaign in fine style, bagging 10 goals in his first full Premier League season, so it was a real surprise when Moyes made him switch roles – and it was an experiment that quite simply didn’t work.

Unsurprisingly, Soucek went completely off the ball for pretty much 18 months. He is not suited to playing in the defensive midfield role one little bit due to his really poor passing ability and composure in possession.

Moyes has changed things around again this season, but the Czech Republic international’s latest comments highlight a real weakness we have in my opinion…

Tomas Soucek comments on free role highlight just how much West Ham need to make a major upgrade

The 28-year-old sat down to speak to the club’s official website about his form this season.

And Soucek shared how he’s been given more of a license to roam this season:

“I’m really happy that I can help the team with my goals. I’ve scored a few already but I think that’s down to the position we’re playing in midfield now. I can defend and I can go forward and attack. I can do whatever is needed to help the team. If that is with goals, then great! But if it’s in another way then I’m more than happy to do that job.”

The thing is, if Soucek is the man who’s being given more of a free role, we have very big problems indeed.

It’s little wonder why our play is so clunky inside the final third at time. Either Lucas Paqueta or Mohammed Kudus should be given the license to roam and if Moyes isn’t ready to play either of them in that role, then he needs to go out and sign someone who is better in possession than Soucek.

As hard as the Czech international undoubtedly works, he is incredibly poor with the ball at his feet and when he’s involved in any of our counter-attacks, they seem to stop in their tracks.

West Ham need to sign a big upgrade on Tomas Soucek in my opinion. He should be a squad player now and nothing more.
