Thilo Kehrer has just inadvertently explained exactly why he flopped so badly at West Ham

Thilo Kehrer has just made comments that maybe explain exactly why he struggled to make it at West Ham.

West Ham United was never the right fit for Thilo Kehrer, and he ended up playing just 3,337 minutes under David Moyes.

The Hammers paid £13 million to sign Kehrer from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2022, but he really struggled to establish himself at the London Stadium.

The Germany international then joined Monaco on loan until the end of the season back in January, and the Ligue 1 outfit have an obligation to buy him for around £10 million as long as he plays a certain amount of games.

I don’t think that Kehrer was a particularly bad player, but he definitely wasn’t cut out for the Premier League. And it seems as though there was another big problem for the former PSG man at the London Stadium as well…

Thilo Kehrer offers explanation for West Ham struggles

The German sat down to speak with Nice-Matin (print edition), about how he’s settling into life at the Monaco.

And Kehrer suggested that his best position is actually in the middle of defence, rather at full-back:

“I’m strongest in the centre, but when the position changes, it’s a bit more difficult. I’m not saying that I wasn’t at my best, but in certain situations I lacked a bit of rhythm and automatism. Of course, when you play several matches in the same position, it helps you to get your bearings and anticipate things properly.”

Whenever Kehrer played for the Hammers, apart from on the very odd occasion, he was deployed as a right-back.

That said, arguably his best and most memorable performance for West Ham was when he came on as a 62nd minute substitute for us in the Europa Conference League final back in June of last year.

Now he has admitted that he is at his best when playing as a centre-back. It’s a shame that we never got to see Thilo Kehrer given a regular run of starts in that position for West Ham.

And it remains to be seen whether or not Moyes will go on to regret allowing the 27-year-old to leave.
