David Moyes rejected chance to sign attacker for West Ham for £20m in 2023, now he has 42 goals/assists this term

West Ham United manager David Moyes made a really poor error of judgement back in the summer transfer window.

David Moyes has really struggled with one thing in particular since taking over as West Ham manager, and that’s finding a striker who suits his system.

It’s why the Hammers boss has become so reliant on Michail Antonio – there just aren’t many centre-forwards out there who are capable of performing the ‘Moyes-ball’ striker role.

Moyes has failed to get a tune out of the likes of Sebastien Haller and Gianluca Scamacca, although the 60-year-old has been somewhat vindicated in his decision to sell the Italian. However, that was an exception the the rule.

One player who would have been absolutely ideal for Moyes’s system is Viktor Gyokeres – now of Sporting Lisbon.

Moyes could have brought the Sweden international to the London Stadium in the summer for just £20 million, before he joined Sporting instead.

And failing to bring him to the London Stadium from Coventry City seven months ago now looks like an absolutely awful decision from the Scot…

David Moyes missed out on perfect signing for West Ham in 2023

The powerful front-man has been in sensational form both domestically and on the continent for Sporting this season, and it could be argued that he’s Europe’s most lethal striker.

Gyokeres has racked up a remarkable 31 goals and 11 assists in 34 games in all competitions for Sporting (Transfermarkt).

The Swede is a willing runner, and is superb at stretching the opposition’s backline by making tireless runs into the channels. He is equally as strong with both feet and is very good at playing with his back to goal, holding up the ball and turning defenders.

Signing the 25-year-old for just £20 million would have been an unbelievable bargain for the Hammers, and I’m positive that he’d have succeeded in the Premier League.

Not bringing him to West Ham will surely now be one of the biggest regrets that David Moyes has during his time at the London Stadium. Things would have been so different had we signed Gyokeres from Coventry. Can you imagine him playing in between Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus and just in front of Lucas Paqueta! Wow…just wow, what could have been.
