‘Shocking’ Paul Merson says 27-yo West Ham man was so frustrating during 6-0 Arsenal drubbing

Paul Merson has absolutely battered one West Ham United player after our shocking 6-0 defeat to Arsenal today.

West Ham were outworked, outthought and generally outclassed by Arsenal at the London Stadium this afternoon. There were so many poor performances, but Paul Merson singled out one player in particular for criticism.

Bukayo Saka was in lethal form for the Gunners today, and bagged two goals for himself, whilst causing us constant problems down their right hand flank.

One Hammers player who really stunk out the place today was Nayef Aguerd. Unfortunately, that display this afternoon has become the norm for the 27-year-old.

The Moroccan has regressed badly over the past year or so, and he is a constant liability now for us, as far as I’m concerned.

Aguerd’s concentration levels and positional awareness aren’t even good enough for the Championship. He is targeted by the opposition week in, week out, and it’s time Moyes made a big upgrade on the former Rennes man.

Paul Merson slaughters West Ham man after 6-0 Arsenal drubbing

The well-renowned football pundit highlighted Aguerd’s shortcomings after today’s shocking defeat to the Gunners.

Merson suggested that the Morocco international didn’t do his due diligence on Saka before the game, when speaking on Sky Sports today (February 11th, 4:08pm):

“The centre-half, you know Saka is left footed! You know he’s coming inside, 99 times out of 100, he comes inside. That tells me, as a player, is he really paying attention to detail who he’s playing against, or are you just turning up on a Saturday or a Sunday and going, I’m just going to play? You’ve got to have more about you, it frustrates me. I know what Saka is going to do, so if I know what he’s going to do, you’ve got to know if you’re working on this all week. It was shocking, shocking.”

Merson is 100% spot on here – Aguerd shouldn’t be anywhere near our starting XI. He is a disaster waiting to happen every single week.

The 27-year-old centre-back just isn’t cut out for Premier League football in my opinion, and I’m hoping he is moved on this summer.

Paul Merson absolutely battered the West Ham defender for his shambolic performance against Arsenal and rightly so – he was nowhere near good enough.
