West Ham United are eyeing up a move to sign Roma centre-back Chris Smalling in the summer transfer window.

That’s according to a report from 90 Min who claim that the 33-year-old defender is firmly on the radar of Hammers boss David Moyes.

Moyes let Craig Dawson leave the London Stadium in the January transfer window, and the 32-year-old certainly needs replacing.

It seems as though Moyes has someone specific in mind…

West Ham eyeing up Chris Smalling summer transfer window swoop

90 Min reckon that the Hammers want to bring the 31-capped England international back to the Premier League in the summer.

Roma signed Smalling from Manchester United in October 2020 for around £18 million (Sky Sports).

The 33-year-old has actually proven to be a decent signing for the Italian giants. I have to say though, I’d be absolutely gutted if Moyes signed someone like Smalling in the summer transfer window.

He’ll be 34 in November and has been playing in a far slower paced league for the past two-and-a-half years.

If Moyes really wants to take us forward as a football club, he needs to be buying young and hungry players, not ageing mercenaries looking for one final big contract. After all, Moyes has repeatedly insisted that he wants to implement the ‘Red Bull’ model at the London Stadium.

Smalling is a solid centre-back and has been for some time now. However, I’ll only accept him as a decent signing if Moyes brings in a top-class central defender with youth on his side as well as him.

The summer transfer window will be a very important one for West Ham. And signing someone like Chris Smalling would be somewhat of a backward step for the club in my opinion.
