No more excuses, David Moyes has to make Tomas Soucek call for the benefit of the West Ham team.

28-year-old midfielder Tomas Soucek was absolutely atrocious for West Ham United against Southampton today.

David Moyes must realise that the Czech Republic international is holding us back in every single department of the pitch.

Soucek never receives the ball on the back foot, slows us down in transition and always seems to turn into trouble.

Gone is the player who was such a threat for us in the 2020/21 season. Sure, some of the blame must be laid at Moyes’s feet for that. The fact that the Scot tried to move him into a deep-lying holding midfielder is just baffling.

But it is what it is. And now Moyes has to take Soucek out of the firing line…

David Moyes must drop Tomas Soucek as a matter of urgency

The 28-year-old put in one of the worst displays I have seen in a Hammers shirt this afternoon.

He really was absolutely awful – there is no other ways to describe his performance.

Soucek made just 21 passes and registered a completion rate of only 52.4% (Who Scored). That is absolutely unheard of for a central midfielder – inexcusably bad.

The Czech midfielder also failed to register a clearance, an interception or a block either Who Scored).

If Moyes is intent on playing a defence-minded midfielder alongside Declan Rice and Lucas Paqueta, then Flynn Downes should be a no-brainer.

However, I feel like we could be so much more threatening inside the final third with a midfield play-maker like Manuel Lanzini or Pablo Fornals slotted in the middle. Or how about Said Benrahma in the 10 position and Maxwel Cornet out on the left wing?

David Moyes needs to be far more adventurous between now and the end of the season, and that should all start with dropping Tomas Soucek.

It may well be the move that completely turns our season around.
