Michail Antonio set for 15,000 mile round trip amid West Ham's busiest period of the season

Michail Antonio is set for a 15,000 mile round trip amid West Ham United’s busiest period of the season after being confirmed in the latest Jamaica squad.

In terms of one player’s importance to a team, they don’t come much more crucial than Antonio is for West Ham.

With no back-up striker in his entire squad, David Moyes has had to carefully manage Antonio during a jam-packed season.

So far he has done that masterfully. But resting Antonio is going to become more challenging the further West Ham progress in the Europa League and Carabao Cup.

One would think, for example, Antonio will have to play against bitter rivals Spurs as West Ham bid to make the Carabao Cup semi-finals?

There was massive relief last month when Antonio snubbed his call-up to the Jamaica squad due to logistical issues.

But Moyes faces an anxious couple of weeks for the November internationals after Antonio was confirmed in the Jamaica squad for a 15,000 mile round trip slap bang in the middle of the busiest period of West Ham’s season.

Antonio will fly to El Salvador for a World Cup qualifier and then to Kingston Jamaica for another game against the USA three days later.

He will then return to West Ham, who face a mammoth TWELVE games in five weeks.

Thankfully Antonio admitted recently that he has not even felt his troublesome hamstrings this season after changing his lifestyle.

But the extra games for Jamaica – who realistically have absolutely no chance of qualifying for the World Cup – and 15,000 miles of travelling are far from ideal given West Ham’s busy schedule in what could be a momentous season.

To make matters worse another trip is then on the horizon in January. And during that one Antonio will have to play three games, including one in Panama.

Speaking only yesterday, Moyes once again highlighted just how important Antonio is for West Ham.

Nobody can say Antonio should not be able to play for his country.

But between Gareth Southgate and the West Ham striker some poor decisions have been made regarding his international allegiance.
