Michail Antonio releases Jamaica statement and it is great news for West Ham

West Ham United striker Michail Antonio has released a statement on his call-up to the Jamaica squad for the October internationals and it is great news for the Hammers.

As reported by Hammers News last night, confusion had surrounded Antonio’s call-up for Jamaica after West Ham did not acknowledge his selection in articles about the club’s international players.

David Moyes was facing up to his biggest Antonio worry yet during the October international break.

As West Ham fans know only too well, Antonio is the club’s only proper striker and has struggled with hamstring injuries for several years.

The forward faced playing three games for Jamaica in just six days and would have had to embark on another 10,000 mile round trip after similar exertions during the September break.

But in a statement, Antonio has confirmed he will not be joining up with the Reggae Boyz on this occasion – undoubtedly to the relief of Moyes and West Ham fans.

Antonio releases statement on Jamaica call-up and it is great news for West Ham

“I can confirm that, unfortunately, I will not be joining up with the Jamaica national squad for the World Cup qualifying matches this week,” Antonio said in a statement.

“Myself, West Ham United, and Jamaica have all agreed that, given the logistical and travel difficulties involved at present, it is better for me to remain with the club in London at this time.

“I remain fully committed to Jamaica and look forward to representing my country in the future.”

Jamaica are playing catch-up in their World Cup qualifying campaign and have little hope of making it to Qatar 2022.

They face USA in Texas before taking on Canada at home and are then away to Honduras.

But they will have to make do without Antonio who will instead get some welcome rest to be fresh for West Ham’s jam-packed schedule when club football resumes next weekend.
