West Ham certainly appreciate Lucas Paqueta but the same cannot be said for Brazil.
They say absence makes the heart grow fonder and you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone.
Well it seems Brazil and the football-mad country’s fans are realising just how true that is when it’s comes to Hammers star Paqueta.
There has been tears and turmoil over in Brazil with the national team in the mud without West Ham hero Paqueta after they turned their back on the midfield ace.
Brazil excluded West Ham’s star man Paqueta amid the investigation into illegal betting despite the midfielder protesting his innocence.
The Selecao were third in their World Cup qualifying group and under huge pressure ahead of tough games against Colombia and Argentina in the last international break of the year.
So much so there have been calls in Paqueta’s homeland for him to be recalled to the squad for these November internationals.
Those calls fell on deaf ears, though, when Paqueta was snubbed was again.
While David Moyes might well be privately relieved as his star turn gets a rest and is not put at risk of injury, West Ham fans have been wondering ‘what happened to innocent until proven guilty’.
Now Paqueta has posted a three-word message to Brazil as disaster strikes again without the exiled West Ham talisman.
Despite his treatment and often harsh criticism aimed at him from the nation’s fans – particularly after their Qatar World Cup exit – Paqueta showed his support for Brazil by watching their game against Colombia overnight.
He posted a picture of himself watching the match on his laptop with the words: “Bora Brasil” – which means “Let’s go Brasil” – as the yellow jerseys took an early 1-0 lead through Arsenal star Gabriel Martinelli.
Paqueta is arguably one of the the form players in Europe this season let alone one of the best Brazilians. And his absence continues to be felt as Colombia scored twice in four minutes through Liverpool’s Luis Diaz near the end of the game to win 2-1.
That leaves Brazil languishing down in fifth place in their 10-team World Cup qualifying group. And things could get even worse with leaders and reigning world champions Argentina up next.
West Ham fans appreciate how lucky they are to have Paqueta. Especially after he came close to leaving for Man City.
And one look at social media shows Brazil fans now realise just how much they miss Paqueta with many demanding he is recalled regardless of the allegations against him.
