West Ham United were well beaten by Aston Villa yesterday, but Kurt Zouma has highlighted one positive for us.
Kurt Zouma and his West Ham teammates were miles off the pace against Aston Villa yesterday, and David Moyes would have been furious with his players.

The Hammers boss spoke to reporters after the game, and criticised the manner in which his side conceded yesterday, specifically highlighting Lucas Paqueta’s role in Villa’s second goal.
Zouma spoke to reporters after the match and echoed the same sentiment – West Ham just weren’t good enough on the day, and pretty much every single player needs to improve massively.
However, there was one Hammer in particular who could leave Villa Park with his head held high – Jarrod Bowen…
Kurt Zouma says one West Ham player’s performance was the only positive from Aston Villa shambles
The Frenchman addressed the media after yesterday’s 4-1 battering by Aston Villa in the Premier League at Villa Park.
And Zouma offered praise for Jarrod Bowen in what was a rare positive for us yesterday, as quoted by WHUFC.com:
“We know Jarrod has been important for us in the last years and he’s going to be important for us [going forward] with how good he is. Every time he is on the ball he can be very dangerous and hopefully we can defend better [in the next games] and give him more chances to score.”
Bowen certainly wasn’t at his best yesterday, but it’s fair to say that he was one of maybe three players who put in a decent shift, alongside Emerson Palmieri and Vladimir Coufal.
With his strike yesterday, the 26-year-old became only the third player in Premier League history to score in his first five away games of the season, after Thierry Henry and Mohamed Salah did it in the 2001/02 and 2021/22 seasons respectively – not bad company for him to keep!
He has been far and away our best player this season so far, with six goals and two assists to his name already (Transfermarkt), and hopefully he continues that fine form for the remainder of the campaign.
However, everyone else needs to pull their socks up. It wasn’t good enough yesterday, and West Ham club captain Kurt Zouma will know that more than anyone.
