A journalist has lifted the lid on what West Ham star Alphonse Areola did at full-time in Cyprus and it is pure class.

It was a case of a professional if unspectacular job done by West Ham after a 2-0 win away at AEK Larnaca on Thursday evening.

The Hammers did not set the world alight by any stretch but they now have one foot in the Europa Conference League quarter-finals ahead of next Thursday’s second leg at the London Stadium.

There were some positives for West Ham with Said Benrahma showing a great attitude after being substituted at half-time of the Brighton defeat to name one.

Michail Antonio got a brace which can only be good for his confidence and Kurt Zouma made his comeback.

Maxwel Cornet also made a welcome, surprising and lively return to action too.

Goalkeeper Areola has been in the spotlight following the injury to Lukasz Fabianski.

The 6ft 5in Frenchman had conceded seven goals in two defeats – although many of those he could do little about.

West Ham got a welcome clean sheet in Cyprus albeit against somewhat inferior opposition.

But it is what Areola did at the end of the game which caught the eye of one West Ham reporter.

The Athletic’s Roshane Thomas took to Twitter to reveal a lovely moment he witnessed involving Areola at the AEK Arena.

“A young AEK Larnaca supporter ran on the pitch in pursuit of Areola,” Thomas said on Twitter.

“The young fan was getting escorted off the field by stewards but Areola kindly gave the fan his jersey.”

You just love to see it.

He may have been number two behind Fabianski during his time at West Ham.

But we must remember Areola is a World Cup winner with France and has been at the likes of PSG and Real Madrid.

With that kind gesture he has made that young supporter’s night and given him a memory to cherish for life.

Well done Alphonse!
