ITK journalist Jacob Steinberg has made a major claim about a new arrival at West Ham in a new David Moyes update.

While a big focus has been on the future of David Moyes at West Ham, it has been confirmed big changes are afoot at the club.

Earlier this week Hammers News suggested recent speculation that West Ham are looking to bring in a director of football would render Mark Noble nothing more than a glorified cheerleader for the first and youth teams.

When Mark Noble was appointed to a new ‘sporting director’ role in January, West Ham stated the legend would ‘work closely in support of the manager, as well as working with the Board of Directors, providing input, advice, and assistance across all aspects of the football operation’.

The former Hammers skipper has had an increasing presence around the first team on matchdays.

And West Ham are being linked with some high-profile names in the Director of Football field.

Hammers move for DoF stirred confusion over Noble role

Sport BILD claimed West Ham have made an ‘official request’ to prise Sporting Director Lutz Pfannenstiel away from MLS club St Louis City.

West Ham have also been linked with Roma’s Tiago Pinto – who has previously had text conversations with Noble.

Talk of the appointment of a DoF at West Ham has left many fans confused.

The big questions have been where that would leave Noble and of course Moyes and head of recruitment Rob Newman too.

Well now that has – in part at least – been explained.

Kaveh Solhekol claimed at the weekend that West Ham want Moyes to remain at the club next season.

But writing in The Guardian, Steinberg – who is well connected at West Ham – claims that the club are undecided over Moyes’ future.

And the reporter has confirmed plans to appoint a director of football alongside Noble this summer are serious.

So much so the process of recruiting that man has already started with five candidates named.

“West Ham are set to appoint a director of football in an attempt to address misgivings over their recent transfer strategy,” Steinberg reports.

Five potential candidates named and no certainty over Moyes’ future

“A recruitment process is under way and changes are expected at the club this summer.

“Potential candidates have been identified and include the former Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards, Monaco’s Paul Mitchell, Brentford’s Lee Dykes and Atalanta’s Lee Congerton. There have been discussions with Victor Orta, who recently parted company with Leeds, but the Spaniard is regarded as an unlikely appointment…

“Sources have spoken of dissatisfaction within the hierarchy over the club’s business. If Moyes stays it is anticipated his influence over transfer business would be reduced.”

Steinberg goes on to cast doubt over Newman’s role at the club. And he states that the decision to appoint a director of football is being led by majority stakeholder David Sullivan – who will also lead the search for a new manager should Moyes depart.

The report claims the club believe hiring an experienced DoF will help Noble during his early years as sporting director.
