Crysencio Summerville starred for the Netherlands in their World Cup opener against Japan on Sunday.

He scored the Netherlands’ second goal on his World Cup debut, which looked as though it would be the match-winner.

Unfortunately, Japan levelled the score at 2-2 with just one minute to go, but it was still a match to remember for Summerville.

Dutch media have since reacted to the West Ham winger’s superb performance on football’s biggest stage.

How Dutch media rated Crysencio Summerville against Japan

The Netherlands squad includes several top-quality defenders and midfielders, but their attacking options are fairly underwhelming.

They will need players like Crysencio Summerville to bring their A-game to reach the latter stages of the World Cup.

Thankfully for Ronald Koeman’s side, the 24-year-old was excellent against Japan despite playing on the right wing.

Dutch media were generally critical of their team’s performances, but Summerville stood out from the crowd.

Voetbal Primeur gave Summerville a 7/10 rating—the highest of all eleven starters, including fellow goalscorer Virgin van Dijk.

“Exactly eleven days after his debut for the Dutch national team, Summerville wrote his own fairytale by scoring a beauty to make it 2-1.

“In doing so, he became the match-winner for the Netherlands at the World Cup in his third international match. What an entrance,” wrote Ruben Winkels.

Summerville received a 7.5/10 rating in journalist Martijn Krabbendam’s match report for Voetbal International.

“Crysencio Summerville was the standout player for the Netherlands during the draw against Japan,” Krabbendam said.

Dutch fans will be hoping that the West Ham winger continues to reproduce throughout the 2026 World Cup.

His next test will be against Graham Potter’s Sweden on Saturday following their 5-1 victory over Tunisia.
