Former West Ham academy prospect Michael Forbes is close to finding his next club after being released earlier this week.

The Hammers announced on Wednesday that they had released nine players, including Adama Traore and Lukasz Fabianski.

Junior Robinson, Tyron Akpata, Daniel Rigge, David Chigwada, Tom Wooster and Jonathan Unwin were also shown the exit door.

The good news for Forbes is that it has not taken long for him to receive a contract offer from another team.

Michael Forbes edges closer to Dundee United move

Michael Forbes joined West Ham from semi-professional Northern Irish club Dungannon Swifts as a 16-year-old in 2020.

The central defender later captained the Hammers’ under-18 team before progressing to the under-21s in December 2021.

Forbes was named among the substitutes for West Ham’s Conference League match against Steaua Bucharest in November 2022, although he never made a first-team appearance.

He had loan spells at two EFL clubs (Bristol Rovers and Colchester United) in the 2024/25 season, but he did not play much for either.

Forbes had a more impactful 2025/26 campaign at Northampton Town, where he made 22 League One appearances.

The Northern Irishman could not prevent the Cobblers from being relegated to League Two and was dropped from the squad in their last nine games.

Forbes did not produce enough to convince West Ham to offer him a new deal before his contract expired this month.

Well, Forbes is now “closing in” on a free transfer move to Scottish Premiership club Dundee United, according to The Courier.

The Terrors finished seventh last season, at the top of the relegation group, and have already made five signings this summer.

Forbes is expected to sign a “multi-year deal” with Dundee United—an exciting next chapter in his football career.

As well as impressing his new club, Forbes will also be determined to reclaim his place in the senior Northern Ireland squad.

He earned his only cap with the national team as a late substitute in a 4-0 defeat to Finland in November 2023.
