West Ham United play host to Burnley in the Premier League on Sunday, and David Moyes won’t be happy one little bit with the latest official announcement ahead of the game.
David Moyes will be desperate for three Premier League wins in a row this weekend, and West Ham surely have a great chance of winning against a beleaguered Burnley side.
The Hammers have looked much better over the past two weeks, and things really seem to be turning a corner, although Moyes is still said to be under pressure with the likes of Marco Silva apparently being lined up to replace him.
I have no doubts that the Scot will see out the season as West Ham manager, and that would undoubtedly be the best way to handle things from the owners. We’re in a situation right now whereby we can still enjoy an extremely successful 2023/24 campaign, both domestically and on the continent.
With two games against Freiburg in the Europa League sandwiched by the Premier League clash with Burnley coming over the next week, it’s fair to day that the next seven days could end up defining our season.
However, there is some bad news for West Ham ahead of the clash with the Clarets at the London Stadium..
Announcement made ahead of West Ham vs Burnley
The Premier League have announced that Andrew Madley will be on VAR duty for our clash with Burnley at the London Stadium this weekend.
I mean, why he’s allowed to play any part in officiating our games anymore is anyone’s guess.
Madley was in charge of the match between West Ham and Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last season, when he put in one of the worst performances you will ever see from a referee.
Maxwel Cornet bagged a vital last minute equaliser for the Hammers, but after being sent to the pitch side monitor, Madley ruled out the Ivorian’s strike.
Now, you might say that it wasn’t actually Madley’s fault, as he allowed the goal to stand in the first place.
However, the 40-year-old could have been stronger in is conviction, and argued the case with the VAR officials – something that Moyes pointed out to the press after the game, as quoted by talkSPORT:
“It’s one [a decision] as bad as I’ve ever had. For a decision to be overturned for that, I just find it incredible. I’m really disappointed VAR would even consider sending the referee to the monitor. The referee then sometimes has to be tough as well. I’ve seen all the angles, I’ve seen all the pictures. The goalkeeper spills the ball, and if anything he then fakes a shoulder injury, which he did for the first goal to be fair. And he conned the referee into that, so there’s nothing we can do.”
It was a truly shocking decision – one that the Premier League and VAR eventually admitted they got wrong.
With the race for sixth place in the Premier League table really heating up, the last thing that West Ham need is to drop points against Burnley this weekend.
Hopefully Madley doesn’t meddle in the game to much, and if nobody is discussing his performance on VAR after the match, that means that he would have done his job properly.
