David Moyes explains exactly why Maxwel Cornet hasn’t been getting any minutes at all

David Moyes has just opened up on the current situation of West Ham United winger Maxwel Cornet.

Maxwel Cornet has barely played for West Ham so far this season – in fact, David Moyes has given him just 119 minutes of action in all competitions (Transfermarkt).

The Hammers forward has played just one minute in the Premier League, and he must be looking for an exit from the club in the January transfer window.

Cornet, 27, surely needs to leave West Ham if he is to salvage his career, and the club are apparently prepared to sell him for around £6 million.

The 27-year-old speedster joined the Hammers from Burnley in the summer of 2022 for around £17.5 million, but he has really struggled to establish himself at the London Stadium.

His lack of game-time this season has been incredibly strange. Why hasn’t Moyes given him more minutes? Well, the Scot has now offered an explanation regarding Maxi’s lack of action…

David Moyes makes Maxwel Cornet admission

The Scot spoke to reporters about the former Burnley man’s tough time at West Ham so far, as quoted by the Athletic:

“He had a bad injury and was out for five months. He’s just been a little bit unfortunate and tonight he probably could’ve got some minutes. We like Maxi, he’s not really been able to have an opportunity due to what we have in those positions.”

I’m sorry, but that just doesn’t ring true. Last night against Brighton would have been the ideal time to give Cornet some minutes.

But Moyes overlooked the Ivorian, and brought 19-year-old Divin Mubama on for the final 20 minutes of the match instead.

What about at the end of November when he bagged a vital assist for the Hammers away at TSC Backa Topola? Since then, he’s been given just two minutes of action.

Something’s clearly not right. I suspect that we’ve already agreed to sell him and Moyes doesn’t want to risk him picking up an injury or his contract includes appearance bonuses, and David Sullivan wants to save some money.

David Moyes might just not rate Maxwel Cornet as well. Basically, his comments above just don’t make sense because if he did ‘really like’ Cornet, he would have given him plenty of minutes over the past couple of months.
