David Moyes defends out of sorts West Ham star Michail Antonio and makes bizarre claim about the striker following the draw with Brighton.
Antonio has been immense for West Ham since being converted from an inconsistent winger to a striker by Moyes.
He is West Ham’s focal point and makes the team tick.
But the Hammers powerhouse is – like most strikers at some point in their careers – suffering a loss of form right now.
With each passing week West Ham’s inability to sign another striker in the summer appears more costly.
Antonio looked leggy and lacking in confidence as he failed to spark West Ham’s attack again in the 1-1 draw with bogey side Brighton.
Antonio has rightly been earning plaudits and praise for his swashbuckling all action displays for West Ham.
But he has not looked the same player since travelling 17,000 miles around the world to play for Jamaica last month.
David Moyes defends out of sorts West Ham star Michail Antonio and makes bizarre claim
He – like a few West Ham players – look in need of a spell out of the side. If only Moyes had that luxury.
Moyes – as any good manager would do – has spoken out to defend Antonio after last night’s disappointing performance.
But the Scot made a bizarre claim that Antonio put in an improved performance.
“I don’t think it (Antonio’s poor form) is either of them (tiredness or the pressure of being West Ham’s only striker) because I think we’ve managed his games,” Moyes said in his post match press conference (Football.London).
“I think he has set high standards and expectations which people have seen. So our hope is just like any striker that maybe he is going through periods of not scoring goals like strikers do.
“So I’m putting it down to that at the moment and hope we are due a bundle of goals from Micky soon.
“Some of Mickey’s play tonight was much better. The keeper makes a really good save from a header late on so there were one or two bits that were much better.”
Moyes is probably just trying to give his player some confidence. And let’s hope it has the desired effect.
Chelsea next promises to be an even more difficult test and West Ham are so far off being anything like at their best right now.
Let’s hope a game against our London rivals gets a response from the players.
