Big Flynn Downes update provided by journalist, and we now know if he’ll play for West Ham again

West Ham United owned Flynn Downes is currently spending the season on loan with Southampton.

Flynn Downes has been in fine form for Southampton during his loan spell away from West Ham at St Mary’s, and Saints boss Russell Martin has been hugely impressed by the midfielder, labelling him as ‘outstanding’.

Hammers boss David Moyes obviously didn’t see a place for the former Swansea City man in his midfield this season.

That’s understandable – I’m not sure that Downes is cut out to play at the very highest level of English football.

However, I don’t understand why we let him leave on loan last summer, only to bring Kalvin Phillips, another defensive midfielder, into the club until the end of the season in January.

What’s done is done now though, and it seems like he could be finished at the London Stadium…

Flynn Downes West Ham future assessed

According to Claret and Hugh, Downes is surplus to requirements at the London Stadium, and West Ham are willing to sell the 25-year-old when the summer transfer window opens.

That doesn’t shock me at all. I actually don’t mind Downes as a player at all, but his inability to make progressive , line-breaking passes means that he’ll always struggle to make an impact for a top 10 Premier League side.

In fact, he only made 43 progressive passes all season long in all competitions for West Ham last term (FBREF).

The midfielder is clearly a very solid Championship player, and he probably could do a good job for a bottom half Premier League side as well.

Flynn Downes seems to be loving life at Southampton, so I reckon he’ll probably join them on a permanent deal from West Ham in the summer.

It’s a shame that things didn’t work out for the boyhood Hammers fan at the London Stadium, but I’m sure he’ll go on to have a successful career elsewhere, if he does indeed leave the club this summer.
