Tim Sherwood has just criticised and praised West Ham United star Lucas Paqueta at the same time.
Lucas Paqueta has been a standout performer for West Ham this season, but he has also been incredibly frustrating at times, and Tim Sherwood has highlighted exactly that.

Hammers boss David Moyes recently admitted that despite the Brazilian’s brilliance, he makes him pull his hair out at times.

Paqueta is currently under investigation for potential betting breaches, so for him to be producing the levels that he has been this season really is quite remarkable.
However, as Moyes admitted before, the 26-year-old does make you pull your hair out at times. His performance away against Aston Villa on Sunday was symbolic of that.
Before the betting breaches allegation was made, it was claimed that he was on the verge of joining Manchester City. The South American remained at the London Stadium in the end though, and in fairness to him, he has always given his all for us, whilst entertaining the fans at every opportunity.
And Sherwood thinks there is a specific reason why Paqueta showboats when he maybe should keep things simple…
Tim Sherwood lauds Lucas Paqueta but slaughters him all at once
Sherwood was speaking about the Hammers star on Premier League Productions (October 22nd, 2023 at 7:10 pm).
And he explained why Paqueta can be so frustrating at times:

“I would play him as a ten. He has so much ability. He is so comfortable on the ball. His range of passing is fantastic. He has an eye for a goal and he can drift in positions. Where you don’t want him in on the ball in his own final third because he takes too many touches – it’s audacious some of the stuff he does. It’s just class. But it’s almost like he is showcasing himself for the next move. He has got loads of self-indulgence in him. He sleeps, lets Douglas Luiz go and costs them the first goal – then it’s 2-0 and it’s all down to him and he’s their best player.”
In fairness, Sherwood’s theory probably isn’t too far from the truth. I have already highlighted right here on Hammers News how Paqueta needs to be more selective when it comes to when and where he showboats.
The former Lyon star is an absolute class act and he’s been our second best player this season, behind Jarrod Bowen, in my opinion.
He does things that no other Hammers player can do, and he offers us so much inside the final third. However, there’s a time and a place for the showboating, and tough away games certainly don’t fit into that category.
Tim Sherwood nailed it with his comments on Lucas Paqueta in my opinion. He is most probably trying to show Pep Guardiola how comfortable he is in possession. It’s a transfer that will most likely happen next season, if Paqueta is found not guilty of the charges levelled against him.
Until then, let’s just enjoy him while we can, but at the same time hope that he reins it in a bit inside the defensive third.
