David Moyes could spring a big surprise on Arsenal this afternoon by starting a rarely seen West Ham United player.

West Ham welcome Arsenal to the London Stadium for the huge Premier League clash today, with both sides in desperate need of all three points.

David Moyes has to try something different today, at least from the perspective of giving it a right go and not allowing the Gunners an easy ride in East London.

The Hammers manager has received huge criticism from some sections of the fanbase in recent weeks for some truly bizarre team selections.

With Lucas Paqueta out injured, the left wing position is currently up for grabs, but Moyes has struggled to fill the void left behind by the Brazilian. The Scot has even tried James Ward-Prowse out there – an experiment that failed miserably.

So why not give Maxwel Cornet a try this afternoon? I actually thought he looked quite lively when he came on as a second-half substitute at Old Trafford last weekend.

Maybe today is the ideal opportunity to give Maxi a big chance…

Moyes could spring big surprise by starting rarely seen West Ham man vs Arsenal

Cornet has been given just 88 minutes of action in the Premier League so far this season (Transfermarkt).

Moyes just hasn’t given him any kind of chance aside from his start up at Sheffield United last month – a game where the Ivorian scored by the way!

So here’s why I think he should start today. If West Ham are to have any chance of beating Arsenal, we will need to cause them real problems going forward, rather than just sitting back and soaking up pressure.

Cornet possesses blistering pace when he’s in full flow, and will offer us a real threat in behind the Gunners backline. We all know how much Ben White likes to bomb on and support Bukayo Saka in attack down the right hand flank, so that could leave some space that we should be looking to exploit.

Playing Ward-Prowse as a left winger, or Ben Johnson for that matter, will play right into Arsenal’s hands.

Starting Cornet out wide on the left will enable Moyes to play a solid central midfield three of Edson Alvarez, Kalvin Phillips and then one of either Ward-Prowse or Tomas Soucek.

If West Ham set up with real ambition to win the game today, there is every chance that we can beat Arsenal.

I reckon that best way to go about doing this will be for Moyes to start Cornet out on the left wing. Come on Dave, you know it makes sense!
