Speculation swirling over the injury suffered by Kurt Zouma may be jumping the gun and it’s not fair on West Ham or the player.

When the initial buzz of West Ham’s 3-2 win over Chelsea subsided, there was a familiar feeling of dread as claims quickly filled the internet over the extent of the injury picked up by star defender Zouma.

The £29 million summer signing from Chelsea has been imperious since his move from west to east London.

Zouma has been an instant hit with West Ham fans.

And he has been a beacon of hope at the back given the season-ending injury suffered by Angelo Ogbonna – with whom he had quickly forged a formidable partnership.

Jumping the gun over Kurt Zouma not fair on West Ham or the player

So there was a sense of deja vu when talk doing the rounds online and social media claimed Zouma’s injury was serious straight after a 3-2 win over another title challenger in the shape of Chelsea.

The worrying thing is that the news first came from well informed insiders Claret and Hugh who made it clear these were “initial fears”.

Such is the nature of the internet and social media, though, other accounts picked up the story and soon the references to Zouma reportedly having heard a pop and the statement of fact that he had suffered an ACL in the past had West Ham fans putting two and two together and fearing the worst.

But until the player has a scan any talk about the extent of the injury is hearsay.

There is a bit of hysteria on social media with some fans having a Twitter meltdown. But to suggest Zouma has done this or that and is out long-term is, at this stage, poor form and based on no firm medical evidence as yet. The hysteria only serves to scaremonger.

Privately the club do not like this kind of speculation on social media either.

Fans are desperately hoping for good news over Zouma.

But the truth is nobody knows for certain until those scan results.

Let’s wait and see what those results say and go from there.

Yes it would be a devastating blow for David Moyes if the rumours are true. But at the moment that’s all they are.

And worst case scenario let’s remain calm and back the likes of Craig Dawson – who continues to prove his West Ham doubters wrong time and again – and Issa Diop, who was immense against Chelsea, to do the business.
