The performance of one West Ham United player vs Freiburg on Thursday night has highlighted a huge potential problem for David Moyes.
David Moyes would have been delighted watching the West Ham vs Freiburg clash from the sidelines on Thursday.
It really was a superb all-round performance from the team, and Michail Antonio will find it incredibly hard to get back into the side when he returns from injury.
One player stood out for the Hammers in my opinion – Edson Alvarez, despite the fact that he had to be substituted off after 55 minutes, and it was a huge relief when he insisted after the match that he’ll be fit to face Wolves.
The 26-year-old bossed the play in the middle of the park against the Bundesliga outfit, and dictated the tempo of the game for us. He recorded a goal and an assist as well.
Alvarez has proven to be a fantastic signing for us, but what happens when he’s unavailable?

Alvarez is so important to us – he’s the glue that holds this team together as far as I’m concerned.
Now, the problem that Moyes has is what on earth does he do if the Mexican is suspended or injured?
We haven’t got another proper defensive midfielder at the club – neither Tomas Soucek or James Ward-Prowse can perform that role.
It’s clear to see that Moyes only has one option. He absolutely has to sign a new DM in the January window.
If he doesn’t do that, Flynn Downes must be kept on in the summer, rather than sold, to provide adequate cover for Alvarez.
In a way, Alvarez’s performance for West Ham vs Freiburg was a big wakeup call for Moyes. We are not the same team when the former Ajax midfielder doesn’t play.
His absence away at Fulham last weekend cost us dearly, and we just weren’t the same team on Thursday night after he went off.
The Scot absolutely has to address that as a matter of urgency by signing some proper competition for the 26-year-old, if we’re to make some genuine progress over the next couple of years.
