However, they were demoted to 18th place less than 24 hours later as Nottingham Forest drew with Crystal Palace.
The Hammers are now below Forest on goal difference, while they are one point behind Tottenham and three behind Leeds.

West Ham would ordinarily view Villa Park as an unlikely place to win three points, but this time could be different.
Unai Emery’s side are stumbling in the race for the Champions League places, with no victories in their last four league games.
Even 20th-place Wolves beat them 2-0 recently, so there is no reason why the Hammers cannot get a result on Sunday afternoon.
West Ham’s counter-attacking style of play will also suit playing against Villa, who often struggle to break down low blocks.
While it would be ambitious to say they need to win, Nuno’s side should be expected to take at least a point from the game.

The other good news for West Ham is that relegation rivals Tottenham and Forest will play against each other this weekend.
Hammers supporters will have a dilemma over which team to support, as both teams have similar chances of going down.
But whatever the result, West Ham will be able to escape the relegation zone again with a victory at Villa Park.
