PSG or Liverpool? What £112m saga means for Summerville and West Ham

Crysencio Summerville showcased another side of his game at the 2026 World Cup; one which may yet open a few more doors for West Ham United’s number seven.

If there was one player who did not deserve to become the villain of last night’s penalty shoot-out defeat by Morocco, it was Crysencio Summerville.

His strike was bound for the top corner before Yassine Bounou – a goalkeeper who is becoming the living embodiment of the term ‘big game player’ – swatted it aside.

How will Summerville’s future be impacted by his World Cup performances? 🇳🇱

He leaves with 2 goals and 2 assists! ⚽ ⚽

Crysencio Summerville of Netherlands celebrates after scoring goal during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group F match between Netherlands and Sweden at Houston Stadium on June 20, 2026 in Houston, United States.

Still, heartbreaking ending aside, this was still a tournament of major progress for the West Ham United winger.

He crossed the Atlantic with two caps, zero goals and one assist. He returns to England with six games, two goals, and three assists.

If the statistics are impressive, he more than passed the proverbial ‘eye test’ too.

Crysencio Summerville has boosted his chances of a big-money West Ham United sale

Morocco ended the Netherlands’ campaign at the round-of-32 phase – Canada will now face the Atlas Lions on Saturday while they, ahem, duck the Oranje – but Summerville’s journey is only just beginning. The next step – as West Ham demand £50 million for his growing flock of suitors – may well be one of Europe’s great outposts.

Especially now that Summerville has displayed a hitherto unknown versatile streak to a global audience.

It was presumed that long-time admirers Liverpool had ended their interest in Summerville following the signing of Victor Munoz this month. Munoz, a right-footed left winger, arrived in a £35 million deal from Osasuna.

Now that Summerville has proven himself to be just as effective on the right-hand side of a front three, however, a Mohamed Salah-less Liverpool may be tempted to step up their interest.

Dutch boss Ronald Koeman even confirmed, before the tournament kicked off, that he had selected Summerville on the right ahead of Anfield’s own Jeremie Frimpong.

“I like that sort of player who is reliable on the pitch,” Koeman said of Summerville. “He’s very capable of playing on the right flank, too. His work ethic is exceptional.”

PSG and Liverpool love Yan Diomande – but they like Summerville too

Liverpool’s pursuit of RB Leipzig winger – and top target – Yan Diomande appears to have come crashing down. The Ivorian sets his heart on Paris Saint-Germain.

The two-time Premier League champions are therefore in the market for an alternative.

And starting as he meant to go on against Japan in matchday one – Summerville channeled his inner-Arjen Robben when scoring beautifully off his weaker foot – a man who netted a late winner at Anfield for Leeds back in 2022 aced his audition with flying colours.

“I started my professional career as a right winger,” Summerville told VI weeks ago. “That is still an option. I could also play in the number 10 position. It doesn’t really matter to me; right, left, centre, a coach can use me anywhere.

“Even though I have been playing as a left winger for two years now, I can easily switch that gear. I am sure I haven’t forgotten how to play on the right flank. You don’t lose that. As a winger, you have to be versatile in modern football anyway.”

‘Versatile’ is not a word often used to describe Summerville at West Ham. The Rotterdam-born speedster has been used almost solely on the left-hand flank in East London, after all.

But as Liverpool scour the market for other right-sided attackers after that Diomande bombshell, Summerville’s World Cup performances have surely boosted his chances of a move to Merseyside, in addition to ensuring West Ham will likely get the £50 million-plus they crave.

RB Leipzig stand firm on £112m Diomande valuation

Future Champions League winner? How far can Mateus Fernandes really go?

Another Jorge Mendes masterclass looming… 💰 🇵🇹

Speaking of the reigning European champions, PSG were linked with Summerville themselves a couple of weeks back. French outlet Foot Mercato even claimed that Les Parisiens were willing to spend upwards of £110 million on he and his Hammers teammate Mateus Fernandes.

Like Liverpool, Diomande was PSG’s top target.

And a storm brewing above the Red Bull Arena could send lightning flashing across East London skies. RB Leipzig are refusing to consider offers below a staggering £112 million – per ESPN – but Diomande is no longer keeping his cards so close to his chest.

“I expect to leave [Leipzig, of course,” Diomande said in the build up to Ivory Coast’s last-32 clash with Norway this afternoon. “I have an agent who will handle the rest.”

Diomande’s less-than-subtle come-and-get-me plea to PSG came immediately after Leipzig’s managing director, Marcel Schafer, said this; “Our clear intention is for Yan Diomande to play for RB Leipzig next season. Let me emphasise this once again – Yan Diomande will remain a Leipzig player.”

Forget the Mateus Fernandes saga, the biggest, most drawn-out transfer story of the summer may be just about to begin.

What this means for Summerville – a leading alternative to Diomande both at Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain – only time will tell.

One thing is for certain though; with two assist and two beautiful goals at the World Cup, from the right-hand flank no less, Summerville’s stock has never been higher.
