What Gianfranco Zola told Glenn Hoddle about West Ham signing Gianluca Scamacca will seriously excite fans

What ex Hammers boss Gianfranco Zola told Glenn Hoddle about West Ham signing Gianluca Scamacca will seriously excite fans.

David Moyes finally ended an 18-month search for a striker when he spent £35m to sign Italy striker Scamacca from Sassuolo this summer.

West Ham fans had been impressed with what they have seen in cameos from the 23-year-old against Man City and Nottingham Forest.

Hammers supporters have been desperate to see Scamacca start up front. And when he did against Viborg in the Europa Conference League qualifier on Thursday night, he did not disappoint.

The Italian looked a threat and was nice and bright from the get go.

And he opened his West Ham account when a clever bit of movement saw him evade his marker and rise to power home a lovely header after a brilliant bit of play and cross from fellow new arrival Maxwel Cornet in the first half.

Some of Scamacca’s touches and first time control drew audible gasps from the West Ham crowd.

And while that says as much about West Ham’s lack of a true quality striker for so long, it suggests Scamacca can be a real hit in east London and the Premier League.

Two men who know a player when they see one – because they were two of the best themselves – are Glenn Hoddle and Gianfranco Zola.

Hoddle was working as a pundit on West Ham v Viborg for BT Sport when he delivered his assessment of West Ham’s new striker and lifted the lid on what Zola had told him about his compatriot.

“The boy can clearly finish,” Hoddle said on BT Sport.

“He has that thing all good strikers need, he calms down when it comes to finishing.

“Whereas a lot of players their heart rate goes up when they’re on goal, his heart rate comes down as he finishes and look at that (the way he strikes the ball).

“I was speaking to Gianfranco Zola about him and he knows him quite well. And he is very impressed, he rates him very highly indeed.

“He told me he thinks he will do very well for West Ham.”

There could be exciting times ahead if Moyes can get the side to knit together and back to their best.
