West Ham ace's character doesn't match his ability according to his ex-agent

The one-time agent of Alphonse Areola has spoken out as the Frenchman continues to warm the bench at West Ham united.

The 29-year-old spent last season on loan from Paris Saint-Germain at the London Stadium.

The Hammers then made his move a permanent one for around £8 million in the summer transfer window.

Areola was expected to usurp Lukasz Fabianski as West Ham’s number one goalkeeper this season, but it seems as though David Moyes had other ideas all along.

The Frenchman has had to make do with the playing the UEFA Europa Conference League games, although he was handed one outing in the Premier League after Fabianski went off injured on the opening day of the season against Manchester City.

It must be incredibly frustrating for Areola, and his former agent has opened up on just how highly he rates the French World Cup winner, despite apparently questioning his character…

Agent gives verdict on West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola

The 29-year-old Hammers stopper played for France against Denmark last night.

He didn’t really cover himself on glory in all fairness, but we still rate him as a truly top-class goalkeeper.

And his former agent Franck Belhassen highlighted how perhaps Areola’s character doesn’t match up with his ability, when speaking to L’Equipe, translated via Sport Witness:

He has all the qualities, the size, the game, he was the goalkeeper of the future. I sometimes wonder how it is possible that he is not a starter at a top European club. But for that, you need character.

Areola clearly is a very talented goalkeeper, but his former agent’s comments raise the question that he may not have the mentality and character needed to succeed at the very highest level.

I completely disagree with that. If David Moyes starts Alphonse Areola regularly for West Ham, we will start to see the best of him.

Moyes cannot continue to start Fabianski. The Pole is well past his best.

And the sooner that Areola becomes the West Ham number one the better.
