The 23-year-old Essex-born midfielder signed for the Hammers on Wednesday from Swansea City in a deal that could be worth around £12 million (The Sun).

The West Ham fans are really excited about the prospect of seeing Downes in action alongside Rice. Hammers News spoke with Wales Online journalist and Swansea City fan Guto Llewelyn last week about what we can expect to see from the 23-year-old.
And judging by what Llewelyn had to say, we’ve got a seriously good young player on our hands.

The Brentwood-born midfielder will be able to learn so much from playing and training alongside Rice.
The 32-capped England international is one of the very best midfielders in world football.
And if Downes is even half as good as Dec, Moyes will have secured an absolute bargain for West Ham.
Downes and Rice already seem to be very happy about the prospect of playing alongside one another.,
The Hammers duo met face-to-face for the first time this morning as all of the squad finally returned for pre-season training:
