Declan Rice has outlined one area of his game that he must improve for West Ham United, when speaking to reporters yesterday.

The 23-year-old Hammers captain has been absolutely sensational for both club and country over the past couple of years or so.

Declan Rice has evolved into more of a box-to-box midfielder from a deep-lying one over the past 12 months, and during that time, he has taken on way more responsibility on the ball for West Ham and England.

Dec is a vitally important player for the Hammers, and keeping him at the London Stadium will be one of the main priorities for David Moyes.

Worrying recent reports have emerged that Declan Rice expects to leave West Ham in the summer of 2023.

Hopefully the Hammers match his ambition both on and off the pitch, and we manage to keep hold of him for the foreseeable future.

Rice is one of the very best central midfielders in world football, but he still has different levels to reach…

Declan Rice opens up on his desire to improve for West Ham

The 23-year-old is already the complete midfielder, pretty much.

Obviously it would be nice if he added more goals and assists to his game though.

And Declan Rice told the Evening Standard how he wants to lift West Ham more during games:

I am always going to be picked out for not having a good game because I have set the bar so high for myself. First couple of games it took me a bit to get going, but I am starting to find my form again. There were so many games last season, and so many now leading up to the World Cup. I am feeling really good. Me and the manager have a great relationship and I am ready to play and give 100 per cent every time I put on the shirt.

I want to do more in possession. Do more on the ball. I want to take games by the scruff of the neck more, because I know I’ve got it in me and it’s just about going out there and doing it. There were games last season where I felt that on the pitch, where I said to myself, ‘I’m going to go and take this game by the scruff of the neck. Give me the ball, I’m going to show you what I can do’. I know I can do that more.

Rice is spot on here. He is our club captain and sometimes, we need him to influence the game more at both ends of the pitch.

That’s not a criticism of Dec, we just know how good he is and what he’s capable of.

Declan Rice undoubtedly has it in him to carry this West Ham team on his shoulders single handedly, when his teammates need him the most. Much like Roy Keane and Bryan Robson did for Manchester United on a regular basis.

The 23-year-old will undoubtedly become the very best players in his specific position in world football during the course of the next few years, we have no doubt about that.

All we can do is hope that he does that in the Claret and Blue.
