‘Special’ player was so close to leaving West Ham in the summer transfer window

Craig Dawson was just two hours away from leaving West Ham United to join Wolves in a £4 million summer transfer window deadline day deal.

That’s according to a report from The Athletic who claim that Wolves had agreed a deal in principle to sign the 32-year-old Hammers centre-back.

Dawson had a medical booked in ahead of his proposed move to Molineux but he ended up staying at the London Stadium after Jan Bednarek rejected a move to West Ham in favour of Aston Villa.

It’s clear to see that fate has conspired to really lend West Ham a helping hand here.

Dawson only wanted to leave the Hammers in order to be closer to his family in the north of England.

He will be staying in East London at least until January now though, and thank the Lord for that. He is actually our best defender in my opinion.

And we really would have missed him, had he moved on in the summer…

Craig Dawson nearly left West Ham in the summer transfer window

We all know that the 32-year-old was close to joining Wolves, but now we know just how close.

According to a report from The Athletic, Dawson was only two hours away from undertaking his medical ahead of joining Wolves before West Ham pulled the plug on the deal.

We’re absolutely delighted that Daws remained at the London Stadium and we would love him to finish his career here, if it is at all possible for him to do so.

Dawson, who earns around £50k-a-week at the London Stadium (Salary Sport), has been magnificent for West Ham and Moyes over the past couple of years.

West Ham are just so much more solid defensively when he plays.

He originally joined the Hammers on a season-long loan from Watford in October 2020. West Ham then made his move to the London Stadium a permanent one for a further £3 million in the summer of 2021 (The Sun).

£3 million for the no-nonsense, tough-tackling centre-back now seems like an absolute bargain.

Daws has established himself as a cult hero at West Ham but he’s actually a lot more than that. He’s a very good good defender, and labelling him as a cult hero really doesn’t do him justice.

The 32-year-old is one of the best passers amongst the West Ham centre-backs now having worked really hard to improve that aspect of his game, and he deserves huge credit for that.

He has been described as an ‘immense’ centre-back by the Evening Standard. And ex-Hammer Carlton Cole once labelled him as ‘special’ (Daily Mail).

Dawson proved once again on Saturday against Wolves just how important he is to this Hammers side.

When he joined the club, his signing was ridiculed by large sections of the West Ham support.

What a turnaround it’s been for Dawson though. He is now one of the most popular players at the club. And we absolutely love him.

Let’s hope that the 32-year-old remains at West Ham until at least the next summer transfer window.
