David Moyes responds when asked what the West Ham players thought about Kurt Zouma decision

David Moyes faced the media last night after he boldly selected Kurt Zouma to start for West Ham against Watford.

The Hammers won the match against Watford 1-0 in what was a fairly drab affair at the London Stadium. The tempo of our play was laboured and we were totally devoid of any kind of creativity or guile in the final third.

There were a few good performances from the West Ham players but on the most part we were absolutely abysmal.

Unsurprisingly though, the majority of the post-match press conference was taken up by questions pertaining to Moyes’s decision to start Kurt Zouma.

The 27-year-old was filmed kicking and slapping his pet cat in a quite frankly disgusting act of cowardice. Zouma’s actions were widely condemned the world over. And rightly so.

The Frenchman also released a grovelling and somewhat disingenuous apology. It seemed to be a case of ‘I’m sorry I was caught’. I’m sure that this will all be forgotten about sooner rather than later and he will undoubtedly be punished behind closed doors.

Nobody expected Zouma to play last night against Watford though. So it was a huge shock when Moyes named the former Chelsea man in his starting lineup to face the Hornets.

The Scot faced the media last night and his post-match press conference was dominated by questions about Zouma’s actions.

Moyes responded when asked what kind of message it sent to his players when he decided to start the 27-year-old against Watford, as quoted by Football.London:

“You are talking to one of the most disciplinarian managers there is. I will always act if I think that it has to be done. I have told you we are really disappointed with, the club are dealing with it and I look after the football side and I had to try and get a result tonight and Kurt at the moment is in our first eleven so the decision was to play him.”

Listen, Zouma being an important player clearly played a huge role in his selection last night.

I would suggest that had it been Andriy Yarmolenko or Issa Diop caught in the act like the Frenchman was, they would have been banished from the squad.

What matters now is that the club deal with the situation. And if the punishment is sufficient then hopefully everyone involved with West Ham, Zouma especially, can move on.
