David Moyes has responded when asked about the in-game decision he made vs Southampton that baffled West Ham fans.

West Ham drew with Southampton at St Mary’s yesterday afternoon, but it was a game that we really should have won…comfortably at that.

The Hammers went into the game in the middle of a real central defensive injury crisis.

Moyes set up with Thilo Kehrer, Ben Johnson and Aaron Cresswell as his three centre-backs, flanked by wing-backs Vladimir Coufal and Emerson.

In truth, Southampton didn’t lay a glove on West Ham after the first 20 minutes or so. The Hammers dominated the ball and got into so many good positions late on in the second-half.

Unfortunately, we couldn’t make the breakthrough and had to accept a point in the end.

Could David Moyes have done more to ensure that we left St Mary’s with all three points though?

With the scores tied at 1-1, and with just a few minutes left to play, Moyes decided to take Gianluca Scamacca off and replace him with Michail Antonio.

Why didn’t the Scot just go for it and play two up front?

Moyes responded when asked that exact question by reporters last night, as quoted by Football.London:

I can understand it. We were gung-ho, we were just looking at somebody who we thought had run out of steam. We got him further than we’ve got him in any other game, so no problem.

We get that Moyes may have thought Scamacca was running out of steam.

Surely with just a few minutes remaining though, the Scot should have gone for the jugular.

West Ham really should have beaten Southampton yesterday. It was two points dropped as far as I’m concerned.

Hopefully we bounce back against Liverpool on Wednesday night and take a positive result with us away from Anfield.
